Gynecomastia
Surgical treatment of enlarged breast gland tissue in men.
Gynecomastia is enlargement of breast gland tissue in men. It is common and causes discomfort with clothing, in sport and at the beach. Surgery restores a flat, masculine chest contour.
Before the operation
- The cause is investigated: hormonal changes, medicines, excess weight
- An endocrinology review and ultrasound are arranged where needed
- The ratio of gland to fat tissue is assessed, and the technique is chosen accordingly
How the operation goes
Gland tissue is removed through a small incision around the nipple, and fat is reduced with liposuction. The two techniques are often combined. The operation takes one to two hours.
Recovery
- A compression vest is worn for four to six weeks
- Office work can be resumed within a week
- Exercise, chest training in particular, starts again after four to six weeks
