Liposuction
Removing localised fat from the abdomen, waist, arms, thighs and chin, and body contouring.
Liposuction removes fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise, using thin tubes called cannulas. It is a body contouring method, not a weight-loss method: the best results are seen in people with a stable weight and elastic skin.
Areas treated
- Abdomen and waist
- Arms
- Thighs, knees and calves
- Ankle liposuction: slimming the ankle
- Back and the area around the armpit
- Under the chin
Related methods
- Power-assisted liposuction: a vibrating cannula loosens fat more gently
- Fat grafting: the removed fat is purified and transferred to the face, breast or buttocks
- Cavitation: a non-surgical ultrasound procedure; its effect is much weaker than liposuction and it needs several sessions
How the operation goes
Local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia is chosen according to the number of areas. Fat is removed through incisions of a few millimetres. I calculate a safe volume for each patient and never remove more than that in one session.
Recovery
- A compression garment is worn for four to six weeks
- Light daily activity can be resumed after a few days
- Swelling decreases over weeks; the final contour forms in three to six months
- Keeping a stable weight is essential for the result to last
