Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
Removing sagging abdominal skin and repairing separated muscles.
Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and rejoins separated abdominal muscles. It is intended for an abdomen that exercise cannot correct after pregnancy or major weight loss.
What it corrects
- Loose abdominal skin and stretch marks
- An apron of skin and fat hanging over the lower abdomen
- Diastasis: separation of the rectus abdominis muscles
- An unattractive navel and umbilical hernia
- A fold above a caesarean scar
Techniques
- Mini abdominoplasty: only the area below the navel is corrected
- Full abdominoplasty: the whole abdominal wall is tightened and the navel is repositioned
- Lipoabdominoplasty: a tummy tuck combined with liposuction, which also refines the waist
How the operation goes
It is done under general anaesthesia and takes two to four hours. The incision is planned so that it is hidden by underwear. The best time is once your weight is stable and you have finished planning pregnancies.
Recovery
- Patients stay in the clinic under observation for one to two days
- A compression garment is worn for about six weeks
- Heavy lifting and intensive exercise are restricted for six weeks
- The scar is red in the first months and then fades gradually
