Breast reduction and lift
Reducing large breasts and raising a drooping breast.
Breast reduction lowers the volume of large breasts, and a breast lift raises a drooping breast back into place. The two are often done together. Reduction also relieves back and neck pain and the strap grooves in the shoulders.
What it corrects
- Macromastia: breasts that are too large
- Back, neck and shoulder pain, and bra straps that leave grooves
- Skin irritation and rash under the breast
- Ptosis: drooping after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight change
- Difficulty with sport and finding clothes
Techniques
- Breast reduction: excess gland, fat and skin are removed and the nipple is raised
- Breast lift (mastopexy): the volume is kept, excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped
- Lift with an implant: when volume has been lost as well as position
- Incision pattern: around the nipple, vertical or anchor-shaped, chosen by the degree of drooping
Operation and recovery
The operation takes two to four hours under general anaesthesia. A support bra is worn for six weeks, and heavy work and exercise are restricted during that time. Scars are red in the first months and fade over a year. The ability to breastfeed may be reduced, so we discuss it beforehand if you plan to have children.
