Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Surgical treatment of a drooping upper lid, under-eye bags and ptosis.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, corrects excess skin, drooping and bags of the upper and lower eyelids. It opens the gaze and softens a tired look, and when a drooping lid gets in the way of vision it removes that problem too.

What it corrects

  • Drooping of the upper eyelid and excess skin
  • Bags under the eyes and fat bulges of the eyelids
  • Loose skin and wrinkles under the eyes
  • Ptosis: a half-closed eye caused by weakness of the muscle that lifts the lid
  • A downturned outer corner or dissatisfaction with the shape of the eye

Techniques

  • Upper blepharoplasty: excess skin is removed through the natural crease of the lid
  • Lower blepharoplasty: bags are corrected through an incision below the lashes
  • Scarless lower blepharoplasty: the fat bulge is removed from the inside of the lid, leaving no mark on the skin
  • Ptosis surgery: the muscle that lifts the lid is tightened
  • Canthopexy and canthoplasty: the outer corner of the eye is supported or reshaped, which is how an almond eye shape is created
  • Asian blepharoplasty: a crease is created in an upper lid that has none

How the operation goes

Depending on the extent, it is done under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia, and usually takes one to two hours. Most patients go home the same day.

Recovery

  • Stitches are usually removed after five to seven days
  • Swelling and bruising settle within one to two weeks
  • Cold compresses and keeping the head raised are advised in the first days
  • You can go back to contact lenses and eye make-up once I give the go-ahead
